304 Stainless Steel / UNS S30400

304 stainless steel is the most widely used austenitic (18-8) stainless steel, valued for its excellent corrosion resistance, durability, and ease of fabrication across both industrial and consumer applications. Its balanced chromium-nickel content provides reliable performance in mild-to-moderate corrosive environments without the added cost of molybdenum-bearing grades like 316. 304 stainless steel is commonly specified for food-grade equipment, kitchen appliances, beverage processing lines, architectural facades and railings, and general fabrication where hygiene, appearance, and weldability matter. It is readily available in coil, sheet and bar forms under standards such as ASTM A240 and A276. For applications involving chlorides, marine exposure, or aggressive chemicals, 316 stainless steel is typically the better choice — but for general-purpose corrosion resistance at a lower cost, 304 stainless steel remains the industry default and the most cost-effective entry point into austenitic stainless steel.
