Custom Stainless Steel Profiles: An RFQ Guide for Buyers

How to specify a custom stainless steel profile by drawing, material, cross-section, tolerance, length, condition, quantity and inspection requirements.

By HydroPlatide Metals6 min read

A custom stainless steel profile is not fully specified by a grade and a sketch. A quotation-ready request must define the cross-section, dimensions, tolerances, length, material, delivery condition, quantity, application and inspection requirements. HydroPlatide Metals reviews made-to-drawing profiles in 304, 316L, 2205 and 17-4PH; feasibility, tooling and trial quantity are confirmed during inquiry.

Checklist

Key takeaways

  • Send a dimensioned drawing, not only a profile image.
  • Separate material grade, product standard and dimensional acceptance criteria.
  • Confirm tooling, sample approval, quantity, condition and inspection before production.

Why is a drawing alone not enough?

Two profiles can look identical but require different forming routes because corner radii, edge condition, straightness, twist, surface and delivery condition change manufacturability. The drawing should identify critical dimensions and tolerances. Requirements that are not defined should be resolved during quotation rather than assumed.

What should a custom-profile RFQ include?

RFQ fieldWhat to stateWhy it matters
Profile drawingDimensioned cross-section, revision and critical featuresControls tooling and inspection scope
MaterialGrade/UNS and applicable specificationAvoids treating an equivalent name as a complete specification
DimensionsWidth, thickness, radii, length and toleranceDefines acceptance criteria
ConditionCold worked, annealed, pickled, polished or other requirementAffects properties, surface and downstream processing
Commercial scopeTrial and production quantity, packing and destinationSupports tooling and supply-route review
Quality documentsMTC, dimensional report, PMI or third-party inspection if requiredAligns evidence before shipment

Which standard should buyers reference?

The applicable standard depends on product form and the purchase specification. ASTM A276/A276M covers stainless steel bars and shapes and asks purchasers to define quantity, form, condition, finish, dimensions, cross-section, grade and specification edition. EN 10088-3 covers semi-finished products, bars, rods, wire, sections and bright products for general purposes. Neither reference replaces the drawing or agreed dimensional standard.

Review Custom Shapes, Processing, Quality & Traceability, 304 stainless steel and 316L stainless steel before preparing the inquiry.

What should be approved before production?

Confirm the drawing revision, agreed dimensions and tolerances, material and condition, tooling responsibility, trial-sample acceptance, inspection method, certificate requirements, packing and change-control route. For a new profile, production lead time should be confirmed after tooling and sample approval rather than assumed at the first inquiry.

Frequently asked questions

Can one tolerance apply to every custom profile?

No. The achievable and commercially appropriate tolerance depends on section geometry, size, material, condition and process route. Confirm it against the drawing.

Is a grade name enough for quotation?

No. Include the product form, standard, condition, dimensions, quantity and document requirements.

What should buyers send to HydroPlatide Metals?

Send the drawing or sketch, grade, critical tolerances, quantity, application, condition, inspection documents and destination.
