Why Is Grade Plus MTC Not Enough?
An MTC helps verify material identity, heat number, chemistry, reported properties and the referenced product specification. It does not reproduce the customer’s heading operation or prove that every point along the coil has the surface condition, local ductility and deformation margin required by the part.

Does the Purchase Standard Match Cold Heading?
ASTM A493-25 covers stainless wire and wire rod intended for cold heading or cold forging. ASTM A555/A555M-23 provides general requirements and distinguishes wire rod as a semi-finished product primarily intended for wire manufacture.
A purchase order saying only “304 stainless steel, diameter 6 mm” leaves the delivered product, condition and next operation unclear. Confirm the product form, governing standard and edition, grade designation, delivery condition and any customer-specific surface or test requirement.
Why Must Delivery Condition Be Verified?
Austenitic stainless steels combine formability with a high work-hardening rate. Prior annealing, drawing reduction and final draft therefore affect the remaining forming margin.
Confirm the ordered and delivered condition and any contractual tensile or hardness range. One certificate value is not a map of every metre of wire.

Cold heading creates high local plastic strain, so a shallow discontinuity can open as material flows into the die. The release plan should address seams, laps, scale, drawing scratches, handling damage and any justified sub-surface inspection.
